Are You Drinking Too Much?

drinking too much

Many people drink too much and yet do not realize until the alcohol takes a toll on their health. So, how would you find out if you are going overboard with your alcohol habits? Ask yourself a few questions- Do you always feel the need of a drink after a hectic working day? Or do you just feel like having a drink without any reason? Are you the one trying to make up occasions so that you can have a few glasses of wine? Then probably you are one of those who love alcohol and do not mind it taking precedence over other things in life.

The number of deaths due to alcohol is shocking. It’s not only the person only who is an alcoholic, it is equally about the people around him or her, who invest so much of time in trying to help wrestle the person back to normal life. No matter how much you are in love with your favorite wine, whisky or vodka, you should remember the UK recommended alcohol consumption limits that tell you how you should be limiting your drinking.

Cutting Down on Beer – Replacing the Volume

Alcohol Free BeerBeer is a drink that is loved the world over, but many beer drinkers would like to cut down on the amount they drink. However, cutting down doesn’t always mean giving up altogether. Cutting down can be difficult and often reaching for a beer is just habit rather than a serious problem.

The best way to start cutting down is to look at the amount of beer you drink and then try to cut it down by one or two days. It is much easier to not drink at all on those days than it is to just have one or two pints because once you start drinking the little voice in your head will try and convince you to carry on.

But I Can’t Stop Thinking About Beer

So, how do you keep that little voice quiet? Well one of the best ways is to make sure you still drink a good volume of liquid on your alcohol free drinking days. What you drink to replace that volume is up to you, but from my experience something with a strong flavour such as ginger beer or orangeade is best. These drink have the added advantages of being gassy like beer, keeping your taste-buds busy and also being available in low calorie or diet versions.

Adding extras to your drink such as ice and lemon or lime slices can make the whole experience more of an event, so you feel like you are having a treat rather than making yourself go without something you love.

I didn’t find that flat drinks were not as good because they didn’t replace that ‘full-belly’ feeling that you get from beer, which suggests to me that drinking beer might be triggered by hunger too (..or maybe I was just using that as an excuse?).

Non Alcoholic Wine Domaine de Fleur Merlot

Alcohol Free Merlot Wine

The is the second of the range we have tried, here is our review of the non-alcoholic chardonnay. We have enjoyed both so far. Well packaged, with a quality feel that starts when opening the bottle and finishes with the last drop of wine.

Domaine de Fleur make no excuses for their attention to detail and quality. Their owner told Alcohol Free Review –

Greek Airliner Hellenic Imperial Airways did extensive tests while selecting alcohol free wines for their fleet (with all mayor brands being tested!) and eventually made a choice for Domaine de Fleur because of its taste and quality.

It is high stress situations like flying that can make you want to reach for a real drink, so that might have been a risky place to run a test, however it really goes to prove that the taste is there in these wines. Read more »

Alcohol Free Lifestyle

I am always delighted to get emails from readers of the site. It is great to hear about people’s experiences of the alcohol free lifestyle. Natalie contacted me recently and gave such a great write up of how she has given up alcohol that I asked her if I could post it. Thankfully she agreed to share it here with the readers of www.AlcoholFreeReview.com She has also put together a great review on alcohol free beer which I will be posting soon…

Hi I’m Natalie and I decided to give up drinking alcohol in July 2010.

The main reason was to live a healthier lifestyle and not have to be reliable or dependant on a substance. I have never been an ‘alcoholic’, drinking heavily on a daily basis or anything like that, but I drank a lot socially. I have always liked a drink and was known to my friends as someone always going out/ drinking and having a laugh. But like anything things get boring and often the same routine can take its toll.

There are lots of reasons involved leading up to giving up alcohol, including dealing with depression. I just believe it is the best option for me personally.
After a heavy night out i made a promise not to drink again for the foreseeable future.

Now 7months on It has been and eye opening journey. From realising what it’s like to be the ‘non-drinker’ in the crowd and finding out how people react to that, to mentally dealing with not drinking in certain situations when usually it would be second nature, to finding new and exciting things to fill my time with. One of which, drinking alcohol free beer, helped the transition of going from alcohol drinker to cutting down to things like lager-shandy, to then going completely alcohol free.

In social situations, alcohol can often be seen as a friend and an aid to bring confidence. It was often the case to find something to bridge the gap between having a nice cold pint of Fosters or having a dull orange juice/coke. Part of the problem here is psychological and you don’t realise this until you are not drinking – the whole buying and drinking alcohol is enriched with rituals including the design of the label, opening, pouring and holding the cold bottle/glass.

Alcohol free beer gives me the choice to still enjoy a beer with friends and not have to feel the odd one out (as much). Although I still sometimes opt for soft drinks and fizzy drinks it’s nice to have the beer option like everyone else.

Chose a Name For Our New Book!

There has been lots going on since Christmas, you may have noticed that the site has been a bit quiet? Aside from the usual commitments my daughter has been ill and stuck in hospital. I am glad to say that she is now on the mend, but obviously it has kept me away from the site for a while.

Now the BIG news! We are currently working on the first AlcoholFreeReview.com book! This is going to be a collection of the best Alcohol Free Cocktail Recipes ever put together. It will start as an ebook and be available here, on Amazon (Kindle), Clickbank and a whole load of other sites. We have been very lucky to team up with some great supporters which will help make this the best book out there.

The recipes are being compiled by a professional mixologist, the graphics by a designer and the photographs by a photographer. Rest assured this will not be your run of the mill ebook.

So this is where you the reader come in. I would like you to pick a name for the book ‘Alcohol Free Review Cocktails’ is frankly very boring and I’m sure there are some great and fun ideas in your mind. Of course you will get a copy of the book if you pick the name, and also a good mention in there if you wish.

Be sure to sign up to the newsletter so that I can keep you updated on the progress.  Id also just like to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped make this site such a success since its launch just a year ago.

ARIEL Non Alcoholic Merlot

Ariel has to be one of the best known names when it comes to Non Alcoholic Wine. I was delighted to have a bottle of Ariel Non Alcoholic Merlot to taste on Christmas day. A tough day to write a review in some ways, because it is a day where you are looking forward to only the best, but a good day to test in other ways because you get the opinion of all of your guests.

It is a well presented wine, the packaging does not shout ‘Alcohol Free’ at you. It is one of the few wines we have tested which has a cork closure. Call me old fashioned, but I kind of like the experience of opening a bottle with a corkscrew.

The wine has a wonderfully deep colour, just as you would expect with a standard Merlot really. Interestingly some of my guests were surprised that it looked just like an ordinary wine having not tried non alcoholic wine before.

Non Alcoholic Beer

Alcohol-Free-Lager

Ever wondered how they make non alcoholic beer?  A lot of people think that it is not actually beer as such but a drink made to taste like beer.  Rather like a soda stream like drink with some flavouring added.  However, this is a common misconception, good non alcoholic beers are beers that have been brewed the normal way and then had the alcohol taken out.

Ok, so you have made a good quality beer and now you want to take the alcohol out, so how do you do that?  Well the most simple way is to boil off the alcohol and collect the alcohol as vapors.  Of course this means that in the production process the beer has been boiled twice (one in the boil before fermentation and a second time during the removal of alcohol).   The downside of this method is that it can lead to strange flavours in the beer.  That is not to say that all non alcoholic beer made this way is bad, indeed there are some very good non alcoholic beers and non alcoholic lagers made this way.
